The southwesternmost point of continental Europe, Cabo de São Vicente is a raw, windswept cape where the Atlantic Ocean stretches unbroken to the Americas. The Romans named it Promontorium Sacrum (Sacred Promontory), and for medieval sailors it marked the edge of the known world. A powerful lighthouse built in 1846, still one of the most powerful in Europe, crowns the 75-metre basalt cliffs. Thousands of migratory birds funnel past the cape each autumn, making it a premier birdwatching location.
