One of the Algarve's most celebrated beaches, Praia da Rocha stretches for over 1.5 km beneath the clifftop town of Portimão, its wide golden sands punctuated by dramatic sandstone rock formations rising from the surf. In the 19th century it attracted Portuguese nobility and was described by writers as the most beautiful beach in the country. The Fortaleza de Santa Catarina, a 17th-century military fortress at the beach's eastern end, commands panoramic views over the Arade River mouth and bears silent witness to centuries of coastal defence.
